Things I do not understand about America Part 1

Hello,

So, I already live in San Francisco for a bit longer than half of the year. I was patiently waiting till time pass that I could express my personal observation about life here.

Smile – yes probably all the world knows about “American smile”. And to explain about it there is no reason. And I mean I don’t want to look like a rude person, but that ” horse smile” where you show all the teeth don’t look real! I don’t mind small greeting, comfortable smile.

Politeness and sensitivity – according to Mr.J from time to time I really fail being polite. But I think that Americans are just too sensitive and too polite and as being Lithuanian its in my roots to be from time to time rude ( and for me its totally normal behavior). Couple weeks ago Mr.J brought home couple boxes of cookies that little girls sells near grocery shops. I ate those cookies and they were good but I was not in love with them. So I was walking out of the shop another day and a little girl asked if I would like to buy some cookies and my respond was: ” oh….we already bought some before” Mr.J came and said that I was rude. Seriously? Well according to him I needed to add those words as pretending being guilty, thank you, sorry, next time and so on…

Small talk – it is totally normal to have a small talk everywhere in the line, in the shop, in the public bathroom, in the street while waiting for someone EVERYWHERE!!!And that creeps me out! because I am not used to that. I like it but it is so weird to listen somebody’s life story in 5 minutes and then that person just go away and I am like thinking “how about we can become friends? why are you going away?” And if I am not in a mood I have different reaction if somebody starts talking to me, my face basically asks : ” what do you want from me?”

Religion – people you do not need to scream about your religion to others, keep that for your self we are all different and its our choice what to believe in.

Taigi, aš San Franciske jau gyvenu šiek tiek ilgiau nei pusmetį. Aš kantriai laukiau, kol praeis šiek tiek laiko , kad galėčiau išreikšti savo asmeninius komentarus apie gyvenimą čia.

Šypsena – taip turbūt visas pasaulis žino, apie “Amerikietišką šypseną”. Ir aiškinti apie tai tikriausiai turbūt ir nereikia. Aš nenoriu atrodyti kaip grubus ir nemandagus žmogus, bet, “žirgo šypsena” parodant visus dantis, man susižavėjimo nekelia ir tai atrodo visiškai netikra! Man puikiausiai tiktų maža, kukli, sveikinanti šypsena.

Mandagumas ir jautrumas – pagal Misterį. J laikas nuo laiko aš būnu nemandagi. Bet aš manau, kad amerikiečiai yra tiesiog pernelyg jautrūs ir mandagūs, ir kaip esanti tikra lietuvė būti šiek tiek grubokai nieko tokio ir tai kartais atrodo kaip visiškai normalus elgesys. Prieš pora savaičių Misteris. J parsitempė namo porą dėžučių sausainių, kuriuos parduoda mergaitės šalia maisto prekių parduotuvių. Aš paragavau tų sausainių skanūs sausainiai, bet nieko įpatinga. Taigi, aną dieną ėjome mes iš parduotuvės ir maža mergaitė paklausė, ar aš norėčiau nupirkti sausainių aš atsakiau : “Oh …. mes jau anksčiau nupirkom jų” Misteris. J priėjo prie manęs ir pasakė, kad aš buvau gana šiurkšti su ta mergaite. Rimtai? Na, pasak jo, man reikų pridėti kelis žodžius, kurie išreikštų mano nusivylimą ir kaltę : ačiū, atsiprašau, kitą kart ir t.t.

Pašnekesiai – tai yra visiškai normalu, kad kažkas kažkur tave pakalbins. Tai gali atsitikti visur: laukiant eilėjė, viešajame tuolete, gatvėje žodžiu VISUR ir tai kartais mane labai gasdina!! Nes aš prie to nesu pratusi. Man patinka tie trumpi pokalbiai, bet tai taip keista klausytis kažkieno gyvenimo istorijos per 5 minutes ir tada tas asmuo tiesiog nueina lyg niekur nieko ir aš lieku galvoti: “Gal mes galėtume tapti draugais? Kodėl tas žmogus išeina?” Bet jei neturiu nuotaikos ir kažkas pakalbina mano reakicja į pašnekesį būna maždaug tokia; reakcija į tokį pokalbį būna šiek tiek kitokia: “Ko tu iš manęs nori?

Religija – žmonės jums nereikia rėkti apie savo religiją kitiems, visi esame skirtingi ir mūsų pasirinkimas kuo tikėti.
